Using vertebrate toxic agents

Find out about best practices for using VTAs and how to deal with adverse events.

Best practice in the field

If you are using a vertebrate toxic agent, there are a number of requirements that you should be aware of. The following is a list of best practices:

  • Do not use VTAs off-label.
  • Always read and follow label directions carefully.
  • Place baits away from stock, wild game, and pets.
  • Use bait stations (if this is a label requirement).
  • Comply with conditions of registration regarding licences, notification, signage, and storage. For more about conditions pertaining to your product, check the register:

    ACVM product register

  • Do not knowingly breach the conditions of registration. Doing so is an offence under the ACVM Act.
  • Ensure compliance with other relevant legislation, such as the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996 and the Animal Products Act 1999.
